Is this program evidence-based?

Thanks for your inquiry. Our program is a social and emotional learning (SEL) program that fuses SEL with character education, positive psychology, emotional intelligence, neuroscience, and mindfulness. SEL has decades of research supporting its effectiveness and why it’s essential. Since our program is grounded in SEL, it is evidence-based in this way. In addition, each of the traits in the Choose Love Formula that is at the heart of our program have research supporting their benefits and impacts. We discuss these in the introductions to our program and in the Educator Guide.

The University of Arkansas recently did a very small research study using our program in an alternative school setting and the preliminary findings showed positive impacts and results. This fall, for the 2019-2020 school year, our program will be evaluated by an esteemed Professor and her team at the University of British Columbia-Vancouver. This will give us more of the hard data and evidence base that you speak of and we are thrilled to be able to see the positive impacts that we know are happening all over the country and world as a result of the Choose Love Enrichment Program.

We send out a short survey each year to ask users to let us know what they think of the program. We are currently reviewing our data from this year, but in the past, users have expressed the highest satisfaction with our program and materials. They almost unanimously have said they have enjoyed teaching the program, that their students have benefitted and that they would teach it again.

We have so much qualitative data in the form of testaments, educator feedback, student work samples and words, and more that praise our program and its impact on students, classes, and schools. Our program has been instrumental in changing classroom and school cultures. We are finding, and it is our hope, that the Choose Love Enrichment Program goes way beyond a program and initiates a practice whereby educators and students, classes and schools, create and sustain a culture of love. It has been amazing to hear about how students have been empowered as they are better able to handle emotions, are able to be resilient in the face of adversity, can connect in meaningful ways with their peers, are engaged in a positive classroom culture, and are able to make healthy, responsible choices that better their lives and the lives of others. While this is qualitative, “soft” data…..we consider it to be the most valid and important data of all.

I hope that I have answered your question and thank you for your interest in the Choose Love Program and Movement.

Is there a list of middle schools in Hawaii that are using Choose Love?

There are over 200 schools in Hawaii that have downloaded our program, 56 of which are middle schools. While we track downloads, we do keep in touch with these educators. Here are some middle schools that used the program during the 2018-2019 school year: Saint Andrew’s Schools in Honolulu, Damien Memorial School in Honolulu, Lokelani Intermediate School in Kihei, and Waimanalo Elementary & Intermediate School in Waimanalo. We also know of a few that will be starting the program for the 2019/20 school year: King Intermediate, Moanalua Middle School, as well as Sacred Hearts Academy (K1-12).

Hawaii is fortunate to have its own Choose Love Ambassador. Kelley Oshiro works passionately as she spreads the word of choosing love throughout Hawaii. In fact, Hawaii is ranked third with the most downloads in the United States! She is excited to help you with implementing the Choose Love Enrichment Program in your classroom, school or district. She is also happy to provide presentations to your staff, administration, students or parent groups. Feel free to reach out to Kelley with any and all questions regarding integration as well as Social & Emotional Learning. You can email her at [email protected]

Is any of the curriculum or parent information in Spanish? I can’t locate it anywhere, but just wondering if I wasn’t looking in the right place. We have a Family Literacy Classroom (Spanish speaking parents) in our school. After I presented the Choose Love program to them, the teacher wanted to do some follow up lessons and classes using the curriculum and we have been unable to locate anything. Thank you for your help.

Was there a reply to the questions about materials in Spanish?

We have the Family Caregiver Letter translated into Spanish. This can be found in the Supplementary Materials which can be accessed/downloaded from the website. They are downloaded from the same page from which the Program is downloaded. (click here: https://www.jesselewischooselove.org/curriculum-downloads/). The Curriculum and Program Materials are not currently translated into Spanish. We hope to be able to do so in the future and we’ll certainly share this with users if and when this happens.

Can an adult get help?

Where is the list of books for third graders to supplement and enhance the curriculum?
I am just filling out a purchase order through the school and I am having difficulty finding the list of trade books to compliment the curriculum.

We have Booklists for suggested titles to supplement the Choose Love Program for Elementary Students. These are located in the Educator Guide which can be downloaded from our website. The Educator Guide is downloaded from the same page from which the Program is accessed (click here: https://www.jesselewischooselove.org/curriculum-downloads/). We included a Booklist for each of the traits (Courage, Gratitude, Forgiveness, and Compassion) as well as lists for books related to Feelings, Dealing with Anger, and Mindfulness.

Is there a certificate that shows completion of the course?

We do have a Certificate of Completion that we hope users will give to each student after they have completed the Choose Love Enrichment Program. This is located in the Supplementary Materials that can be accessed/downloaded from the website. They are downloaded from the same page from which the Program is downloaded. https://www.jesselewischooselove.org/curriculum-downloads/
